Graduate School of Education Seminar - The challenges of doing research in Africa: Data Quality, April 2010
A round table discussion organised in association with EdQual on the theme of 'the challenges of doing research in Africa: Data Quality'. The session will be chaired by Dr. Angeline Barrett and the participants will be four current PhD students (Jolly Rubagiza, Alphonse Uworwabayeho, Dorothy Phumbwe and Massoud Salim).
Full Abstract:
Collecting data in low income countries can raise a range of issues in relation to data quality and research ethics that are not anticipated in standard research methods texts or ethical guidelines. The discussants are all doctoral researchers, who have collected their data in East Africa. They will start the discussion by talking about their own experiences of using national assessment data in a school effectiveness study; capturing professional reflections in action research; negotiating research relationships in a rural school and collecting data on that extremely sensitive topic of school finances.
